A1 Spanish reading

El ñandú de la pampa

A1 · Beginner 151 words 1 min read Nature

Meet a bird that has wings and does not fly. The ñandú lives on the Argentine pampas, and this text describes how it looks, what it eats and how it raises its young. The sentences are short, which makes it a good place to notice how Spanish describes animals.

Your challenge

Read it through once, then answer from memory: where does the ñandú live, and who looks after the eggs?

When you finish, check yourself with the questions below.

El ñandú come plantas y semillas. También come pequeños insectos.

  • ave bird
  • alas wings

Notice this: Pero: but

Pero joins two ideas that pull in opposite directions. Spanish usually puts a comma before it. Here the wings suggest flying, but pero turns the sentence around.

  • “Tiene alas, pero no vuela”
